If you're curious about how I can help you, book an appointment with me right away. I guarantee that you'll walk away from our coaching session with the surprising discovery that yes, you too can make even the Yellow Pages, compelling to listen to. Because once an audience is compelled, they'll want to be part of the story. They'll want to be part of your narrative and THAT'S how products are sold. My belief is that beyond logical thinking, beyond logical presentations, beyond a logical decision to sell or buy something, there lies a field where emotion can drive a narrative, can drive an experience, and ultimately a sale. If you can learn to hone your ability to emotionally connect with an audience, you'll ultimately give them a compelling reason to invest in your product.. Or should I say, REMIND them? Because ultimately you're only telling them what they've already decided. They just don't know it yet. And it's YOUR job to uncover that.
The compelling difference between me and other presentation coaches is that I have an innovative approach to extracting and fine tuning what's already there in a person. I challenge my clients to find a compelling narrative that goes beyond mere content. I guide my clients to leap beyond cliched notions of what a presentation should look and feel like. I break down narrow views on public presentation techniques and focus on accentuating content through the power of your authentic self. I work as a stage or film director and tease out the resonant power of personal core values to infuse the presentation with higher stakes so that the storyteller and the listener experiences something compelling.

So what about scripts? In life, we all have them. We all rehearse them. We all recite them and use them on other people. Some scripts are more successful than others. The way an actor tackles a script depends on the actor. My process is always evolving depending on the project and informed by my formal training and professional experience. These blog entries will share with you my basic process when I learn a script in preparation for a movie project or stage roll. Then I will investigate aspects of an actor's process which could potentially transfer to an entrepreneur preparing for a pitch or presentation. More often, I find a pattern of stilted presentations and pitches from entrepreneurs and CEOs. Why is this? My theory is because they're pitching from a logical, left-brain perspective. If you watch Steve Jobs, he immediately connects with his audience from an emotional place. He's truly passionate about the impact it can have on the world. He uses emotional words to effect and you believe him. You believe him because he believes it and can back it up. A startup CEO has this passion within. The challenge is that more often than not, the CEO has been in a different thinking modality. Because of this fragmentation , s/he ends up giving a speech from a research and solution modality. So by the time the pitch to investors happen, it's just a garbled regurgitation of research findings. There's nothing wrong with this and certainly has a place, but this is boring. Have you ever felt that the pitch could've gone better? As a coach, I help you identify in simplest terms what you're truly passionate about. I ask questions like, "Are you excited about the implications of this product? If so, why?" I empower and challenge the speaker to investigate a simple narrative, (down to the choice of words) and help them translate it in a monologue form. (Much like a professional actor would approach text analysis for a play or monologue.) The work doesn't end there. Once the speaker has scripted a story, I guide them to explore it vocally and physically to tease out a more dynamic narrative that more reflects who they really are. It will result in a more authentically resonant connection to your audience. Put the focus on the story, not the sell. In the purest form, aligning your passion to emerging narratives in your pitch, ultimately paves the way to wider possibility to continue scripting the journey of innovation within your company. To quote the master story teller, Shakespeare: "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women, merely players." As you shape your passion, you will own your stage, and ultimately the world will know your story.
How so?
When a professional actor approaches a monologue, they have to do the following even before attempting to perform it:
So I would assume that before a pitch, a CEO or entrepreneur will do the following before their event:
I believe there's an assumption out there that if you aren't a theater artist, one lacks charisma and product pitching skills. What if I told you that by re-framing the way you learn your presentation from the lens of a theater artist, you can resonate with impact towards your audience? What if I told you that with just a few "theatrical" adjustments, your inner Laurence Olivier or Meryl Streep can be unleashed in a very authentic and charismatic way which would ultimately create not just a product sell, but an unforgettable experience for all involved? |
